1. OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for preparation of 0.05M Potassium Iodate,
2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Quality Control Department
3. RESPONSIBILITY
• Officer QC
• Manager QC
4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Proper handling the apparatus.
• Be sure to wear appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection, when handling chemicals
• Additionally, it is important to weigh the chemical accurately and dissolve it completely to ensure the desired concentration of the solution.
5. PROCEDURE
5.1 PREPARATION
5.1.1 Calculate the molar mass of KIO3:
K: 39.10 g/mol
I: 126.90 g/mol
O3: 3 x 16.00 g/mol = 48.00 g/mol
Molar mass of KIO3 = 39.10 + 126.90 + 48.00 = 214.00 g/mol
5.1.2 Calculate the amount of KIO3 needed to prepare 1 liter of 0.05 M solution:
Molarity = moles of solute / volume of solution
Rearranging the formula: moles of solute = Molarity x volume of solution
Moles of KIO3 needed = 0.05 x 1 = 0.05 moles
5.1.3 Calculate the mass of KIO3 needed using the mole-mass conversion:
Mass = moles x molar mass
Mass of KIO3 needed = 0.05 x 214.00 = 10.70 g
5.1.4 Dissolve 10.70 g of KIO3 in distilled water and make up to a final volume of 1 liter. You can use a volumetric flask to ensure accuracy
5.1.5 Mix the solution thoroughly until all the solid has dissolved.
