Procedure for preparation and standardization 1N Potassium Hydroxide

1. OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for preparation and standardization of 1N Potassium Hydroxide

2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Quality Control Department

3. RESPONSIBILITY
• Officer QC
• Manager QC

4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Proper handling the apparatus.
• Be sure to wear appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection, when handling KOH as it is a strong base and can cause severe burns.
• Additionally, it is important to weigh the chemical accurately and dissolve it completely to ensure the desired concentration of the solution.

5. PROCEDURE
5.1 PREPARATION
5.1.1 Calculate the required amount of KOH:
5.1.2 1N KOH solution means one mole (56.10 grams) of KOH per liter of solution.
5.1.3 So, to make 1 liter of 1N KOH solution, you will need 56.10 grams of KOH.
5.1.4 Weigh out 56.10 grams of KOH using a digital balance or other precise weighing device.
5.1.5 Add the KOH to a clean, dry, and heat-resistant container.
5.1.6 Add distilled or deionized water to the container until the total volume reaches 1 liter.
5.1.7 Stir the mixture until the KOH is completely dissolved in the water.

5.2 STANDARDIZATION
5.2.1 Dissolve 68 g of potassium hydroxide in about 950 mL of water.
5.2.2 Add a freshly prepared saturated solution of barium hydroxide until no more precipitate forms. Shake the mixture thoroughly, and allow it to stand overnight in a stoppered bottle.
5.2.3 Decant the clear liquid, or filter the solution in a tight, polyolefin bottle, and standardize by the procedure set forth for Sodium Hydroxide, Normal (1 N).
5.2.4 And calculate the normality by the following formula:

         g KHC8H4O4
N= ————————————–
         0.20430 x ml of NaOH
