1. OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for preparation and standardization of 0.1 N Potassium Bromide–Bromate
2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Quality Control Department
3. RESPONSIBILITY
• Officer QC
• Manager QC
4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Proper handling the apparatus.
• Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling this chemical.
• Always handle the chemicals with care and dispose of any waste properly.
5. PROCEDURE
5.1 PREPARATION
5.1.1 Weigh 2.78 g of potassium bromate (KBrO3) and 12.0 g of potassium bromide (KBr) using a weighing balance.
5.1.2 Add the weighed KBr and KBrO3 into a clean, dry 1000 mL volumetric flask.
5.1.3 Add distilled water to the volumetric flask up to the mark.
5.1.4 Use a stirring rod to dissolve the KBr and KBrO3 in the water.
5.1.5 Once the KBr and KBrO3 have completely dissolved, mix the solution thoroughly by stirring.
5.1.6 The resulting solution is 0.1N potassium bromide-bromate solution.
5.1.7 Store the solution in a clean, dry container with a tight-fitting lid.
5.2 STANDARDIZATION
1.1.1 Transfer an accurately measured volume of about 40 mL of the solution to a glass-stoppered flask, add 3 g of potassium iodide, and follow with 3 mL of hydrochloric acid.
1.1.2 Allow to stand for 5 minutes, then titrate the liberated iodine with 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate VS, adding 3 mL of starch TS as the endpoint is approached.
1.1.3 Correct for a blank run on the same quantities of the same reagents, and calculate the normality.
1.1.4 And calculate the normality by the following formula:
ml Na2S2O3 x N Na2S2O3
N= —————————————————————-
ml KBrO3/KBr
