1. OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for preparation and standardization of 0.1 M Lead Perchlorate
2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Quality Control Department
3. RESPONSIBILITY
• Officer QC
• Manager QC
4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Proper handling the apparatus.
• As lead compounds are toxic. Therefore, it is recommended to wear gloves and protective eyewear when handling lead nitrate.
• Additionally, it is important to weigh the chemical accurately and dissolve it completely to ensure the desired concentration of the solution.
5. PROCEDURE
5.1 PREPARATION
5.1.1 Determine the molecular weight of Lead Perchlorate. The molecular weight of Lead Perchlorate is 460.15 g/mol.
5.1.2 Calculate the amount of Lead Perchlorate needed to prepare the solution. To prepare a 0.1 M solution, you will need 0.1 moles of Lead Perchlorate per liter of solution. Therefore, to prepare 1 liter of solution, you will need:
0.1 moles/L x 1 L = 0.1 moles
5.1.3 The mass of Lead Perchlorate required can be calculated using the following formula:
Mass (g) = moles x molecular weight (g/mol)
Mass (g) = 0.1 moles x 460.15 g/mol
Mass (g) = 46.01 g
5.1.4 Weigh out 46.01gm of Lead Perchlorate using a balance.
5.1.5 After measuring the required amount, transfer it into a 1 liter volumetric flask.
5.1.6 Add a small amount of distilled water to the flask and swirl to dissolve.
5.1.7 Then fill up the flask with distilled water until the mark and mix well.
5.2 STANDARDIZATION
5.2.1 5.2.1 Accurately weigh about 150 mg of sodium sulfate, previously dried at 105 for 4 hours, and dissolve in 50 mL of water. Add 50 mL of a mixture of water and formaldehyde (1:1), and stir for about 1 minute.
5.2.2 Determine the endpoint potentiometrically using a lead ion selective electrode.
5.2.3 Perform a blank determination, and make any necessary corrections. Each 14.204 mg of sodium sulfate is equivalent to 1 mL of 0.1 M lead perchlorate.
5.2.4 And calculate the normality by the following formula:
mg of Sodium sulfate
M= ————————————-
142.04 x ml of Lead perchlorate
