Procedure for preparation and standardization 0.1 M Lead Nitrate

1. OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for preparation and standardization of 0.1 M Lead Nitrate

2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Quality Control Department

3. RESPONSIBILITY
• Officer QC
• Manager QC

4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Proper handling the apparatus.
• As lead compounds are toxic. Therefore, it is recommended to wear gloves and protective eyewear when handling lead nitrate.
• Additionally, it is important to weigh the chemical accurately and dissolve it completely to ensure the desired concentration of the solution.

5. PROCEDURE
5.1 PREPARATION
5.1.1 Determine the molecular weight of Lead Nitrate. The molecular weight of Lead Nitrate is 331.21 g/mol.
5.1.2 Calculate the amount of Lead Nitrate needed to prepare the solution. To prepare a 0.1 M solution, you will need 0.1 moles of Lead Nitrate per liter of solution. Therefore, to prepare 1 liter of solution, you will need:
      0.1 moles/L x 1 L = 0.1 moles
5.1.3 The mass of Lead Nitrate required can be calculated using the following formula:
      Mass (g) = moles x molecular weight (g/mol)
      Mass (g) = 0.1 moles x 331.21 g/mol
      Mass (g) = 33.11 g
5.1.4 Weigh out 33.11gm of Lead Nitrate using a balance.
5.1.5 After measuring the required amount, transfer it into a 1 liter volumetric flask.
5.1.6 Add a small amount of distilled water to the flask and swirl to dissolve.
5.1.7 Then fill up the flask with distilled water until the mark and mix well.
5.2 STANDARDIZATION
5.2.1 To 20.0 mL of the lead nitrate solution add 300 mL of water.
5.2.2 Add about 50 mg of Xylenol Orange Triturate, and add methenamine until the solution becomes violet-pink.
5.2.3 Titrate with 0.1 M edetate disodium VS to the yellow endpoint. Calculate the molarity.

Xylenol Orange Triturate— Triturate 1 part of xylenol orange with 99 parts of potassium nitrate.
