1. OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for preparation and standardization of 0.1 N Ceric Sulphate
2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to Quality Control Department
3. RESPONSIBILITY
• Officer QC
• Manager QC
4. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Proper handling the apparatus.
• Cerium sulfate is a strong oxidizing agent and can react violently with organic materials, so handle it with care.
• Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling this chemical.
5. PROCEDURE
5.1 PREPARATION
5.1.1 Weigh out 33.22 g of ceric sulphate using a balance.
5.1.2 After measuring the required amount ceric sulphate, transfer it into a 1 liter volumetric flask.
5.1.3 Add a small amount of distilled water to the flask and swirl to dissolve the ceric sulphate.
5.1.4 Then fill up the flask with distilled water until the mark and mix well.
5.2 STANDARDIZATION
5.2.1 Accurately weigh about 0.2 g of sodium oxalate, primary standard, previously dried for 2 hours at 105 , and dissolve in 75 mL of water.
5.2.2 Add, with stirring, 2 mL of sulfuric acid that has previously been mixed with 5 mL of water, mix well, add 10 mL of hydrochloric acid, and heat to between 70 and 75 . Titrate with 0.1 N ceric sulfate to a permanent slight yellow color.
5.2.3 Each 6.700 mg of sodium oxalate is equivalent to 1 mL of 0.1 N ceric sulfate.
5.2.4 And calculate the normality by the following formula:
mg Na2C2O4
N= ————————————–
67 x ml of Ce(SO4)2 solution
